Let’s briefly identify the most common types of exterior paint failures.
1. Paint blistering or paint peals. This is caused by poor paint adhesion to the original surface due to the moisture being trapped under the original coat or unclean surface.
2. Paint chalking. Test your home by running your hand against the exterior walls; if your palm is covered in white pigment, this is the result of paint chalking. This is often caused by low paint quality. Paints exposed to sun and rain for a long time will need to be resealed with a primer and a topcoat of paint to protect your home. However, low-grade paint won’t last as long as a higher quality will.
HOW TO FIX PAINT FAILURE?
Most paint failures occur because of poor surface preparation. Therefore, the key to avoiding and fix them is to do a thorough surface preparation before painting. That is why hiring a professional like Vickers Painting Specialists can save you a lot of time and hard work.
1. The Best way to fix paint peels or blisters is to use a High PSI power washer to remove all the peeling paint. Removing molded areas with a special cleaner and waiting for it to dry fully. Check that all paint that was peeling was removed while power washing. Ensuring that paint is no longer peeling will help seal the edges with a compound to ensure no water gets trapped under the paint. When priming, be sure to back roll to secure a strong seal between layers. Finally, put a high-quality top coat of paint for a beautiful finish.
2. When old paint is chalking, be sure to power wash, focusing extra attention on areas that show signs of chalking. Do not skip this step. Then let the surface properly dry for at least 24-48 hours. Afterward, you will need to prepare the surface by putting on a paint sealer to help the new paint adhere strongly to the surfaces. Once that has been properly cured, you may move on to the final coat of paint of your choice.
Please note that we recommend repainting the whole surface wall or walls if you want the best finish and result. We strongly encourage not to fix paint failures in patches if you want to have a beautiful and even finish.
